Vilafonté, 'Seriously Old Dirt', 2018, Paarl, South Africa

A truly impressive red wine from South Africa. A Malbec led blend with a deep garnet colour, fruit driven, with ripe cherry aromas. Touches of sweet spice, wood, toasty coconut, and nuanced sweet tobacco. Incredibly smooth, generous in flavour, and satisfying long juicy tannins. Can be enjoyed now but will continue to improve with a few years in the cellar. Highly recommended.

21 months ageing in seasoned French oak barrels. And only 89 of them are produced!

Vilafonté (which was founded in 1996) became the first American and South African joint wine-making venture, and these days is considered one of the most pioneering wineries in South Africa. Vilafonté produces two main wines from its premium vineyard site. Series C (Cabernet Sauvignon led) and Series M (Merlot driven). They also produce a limited release wine called 'Seriously Old Dirt' which comes from younger vines and uses a Malbec focused blend.
