This is great bottle of red from Tuscany. It's a baby 'Super-Tuscan', where native Sangiovese has been blended with international varieties. The concept first arrived around the 1970s with brazen winemakers and was very controversial, but over time, this 'de-classified' style has become accepted and actually celebrated as a part of premium Tuscan wine culture. Nearly all super-Tuscans come under the Toscana IGT label, because the traditional laws of Tuscan wine regions do not allow international varieties in the wine.
This example by San Polo has a lovely array of cherry, violet, and red fruit aromas with touches of spice. Well structured, robust, textured and very satisfying. Acidity and freshness form the Sangiovese, fruit from the Merlot, and structure from the Cabernet. A delicious easy to drink strong medium red which utilises the best of two worlds.
