Bin 389 - a legendary wine and known colloquially as 'Baby Grange', in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. Bin 389 highlights the generous mid-palate Penfolds is known for.
Dark fruit luxury, aromas of black cherry and cassis. Touches of menthol in there too. Flavours of roasted beetroot, and a rich meatiness like venison. Oak and tannin superbly integrated, intense, and luscious red wine with a velvet like fell on the palate. Definitely a wine which ages beautifully, often up to 15-20 years.
Penfolds are arguably the most iconic premium Australian winery, certainly in a global recognition sense. They started in the 1840s by a doctor who made medicinal wines from the nearby vineyards, it wasn't long before they realised the potential as a still red wine. The winery changed the course of wine history with their epic top wine "Grange" which was the first non-French wine to win a Paris wine show in the 1950s. Many of the Penfolds wines are highly collectible, and continue to impress.
