Lukas Van Loggerenberg, 'Breton', Cabernet Franc, 2019, Stellenbosch, South Africa

A fantastic 100% Cabernet Franc from a modern and respected South African producer. Expect oodles of luscious herbal, leafy, ripe aromas and a good backbone of chalky, mineral laden dark fruit. Touches of oak and superb integration. Excellent execution of Cabernet Franc and a lovely expression of what modern South African winemaking can do with this versatile grape.

This wine is made from 2 parcels of fruit, made into wine separately then blended (after 10 months in oak barrels) just before bottling to create the style of the wine. 66% of the juice is from the Bluegum Grove wine farm, and the rest from the Klein Welmoad farm. Both sites have granite based soils. Both wines also received two weeks with skin contact after fermentation to enrich the flavour and give complexity. No commercial yeasts were used in the production.

Lukas van Loggerenberg is a winemaker who owns no vines. But out of a large and remote shed he crafts wonderful wines. He sources from premium sites and growers in the area which are recognized for their fruit quality. A young, ambitious winemaker who is turning heads in South Africa, even greats like Chris Alheit are aware of his modern, innovative ideas.
