Gorka Izagirre, 'Txakolí', 2019, Bizkaiko Txakolina, Spain

This is a white wine from the Basque region of Spain. As a general rule, they are built for food. Beautiful aromas of green apple, white blossom, and greengage. It's bright, racy, saline, and quite textured. There's a very slight bitterness on the finish which is refreshing and helps bring purity and liven up food, especially green olives, a perfect partner. Highly recommended.

Producing stunning wines from the Basque Country’s famous Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia grapes, Gorka Izagirre is one of the best known Txakoli producers with 40 hectares of vines (across small plots) on their estate on the precipitous, rolling countryside surrounding Bilbao. The small, yet perfectly formed timber clad winery is where their precious grapes are turned into pure, modern Txakoli with a distinctive precision and mineral twang. The winery also owns a rather splendid 3 Michelin-starred restaurant, where these stunning wines compliment the world-class food on offer.
