El Risco, 'Red', Calatayud DO, 2018, Aragon, Spain

This superb red blend is an unsual mix of Shiraz, Grenache, and Bobal. Clean, structured, and full of flavour. All the grapes are fermented together (which is uncommon), and it's so integrated and wild. Very nice red berry and spice aromas, smooth tannins, and an elegant flavour. You can tell it's high quality, and it's so clean and ripe. 100% modern Spain.

Calatayud was a major viticultural hub at the beginning of the 20th century with over 40,000 hectares of vineyards. Today only 3,000 remain. It's a treasure trove of old forgotten vineyards. El Risco is a project wine made between the UK importer and local winemakers who perhaps don't have the means to get their lovely wines into the world by themselves.
