Boekenhoutskloof, 'The Chocolate Block', 2019, Swartland, South Africa

A legendary wine with an almost cult like following. Delicious, inviting, rounded, rich, and smooth. Dark, brooding nose of tobacco, coffee, cocoa, and flavours of olives, spice, and ripe plums. Fine tannins, layered, clean and peppery. An absolute knock out wine for the price and something that will continue to delight red wine fans.

The make-up of this wine is tweaked from vintage to vintage to best reflect the season and the ancient vines of great character that are an integral part of the wine’s charm and personality. As a producer, Boekenhoutskloof is a Syrah specialist, with its premium Boekenhoutskloof range selling out on release each vintage, and The Chocolate Block – a Syrah based blend – is probably the most successful premium wine offering to come out of South Africa in the modern era.

Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, the farm’s name means “ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed).
