Of all the grape varieties we see, perhaps Riesling has had the hardest time.
While revered by the inner wine industry, most British people's past experience of Riesling was cheap sweet white wines from Germany under huge brand names like Blue Nun, and Black Tower. Sadly, this has somewhat cemented a consumer perception which just isn't really true.
The good news... Riesling has evolved. The quality from Germany is very high, and more dry elegant styles are available than back in the 80s and 90s. Also countries like Australia and South Africa now produce world class dry Riesling that can be some of the most delicious wines on the planet. It's time to forgive Riesling for it's past misdemeanors, and embrace a new modern style.
